The upper range papers satisfy all
the following criteria:
A. Each paper shows keen observation and
reflection.
B. Each paper shows imaginative insight.
C. Each paper shows a sensitivity to the nuances
of words.
D. Each paper shows control of appropriate formal
elements: metrics, etc.
E. Each paper shows effective use of figurative
language.

This score should be used for papers
which fulfill the basic requirements for the 6
grade (meeting all criteria) but are thinner.

Middle range papers omit or are
deficient in one of the criteria:
A. The writing shows an absence of meaningul
detail.
OR
B. The writing is unimaginative.
OR
C. The writing shows the use of hackneyed words
and phrases.
OR
D. The writing lacks facility with formal
elements.
OR
E. This writing shows a failure to accomplish the
desired effect..

This grade should be used for papers
which fulfill the requirements for a 4 but
are weaker.

Lower
range papers are deficient in two or more of the
criteria.

| 1
This grade should be reserved for on-topic
responses which have almost no redeeming
qualities.
Response papers will be evaluated on the quality
of writing that we have come to associate with
the appropriate school level.
